Did you know that anyone can offer a certification? There are many of them on the market, so why do we need another?
Consider that not all certifications are equal...Most check your knowledge level at the end of a course. We know that attending a course often does not translate into competent action.
The Certified Change Management Professional (CCMP) is focused on experience: The ability to apply what you've learned. That will carry more weight in the market. Our survey respondents agree. We asked them to state their agreement with the following benefits of certifications focused on experience and the majority overwhelmingly agreed with ACMP's objectives for CCMP:
But not everyone agreed. We asked for feedback on the objections we would face in rolling it out.
"Most people who take [a course on CM] announce that they are certified as a change management professional, so the market will struggle to understand this other certification and how it's different."
"It's yet another certification!!! Explain why the certification has been created and what's the added value for customers to work with accredited practitioners instead of working with non-accredited. The "what's in it for me" question should be answered both for the potential CCMP as for her/his customers."
"I think we have a long way to go until our standards and certification are accepted in the same way as PMI and APR so I think it is incumbent upon us to ensure that this certification really does help legitimize the profession...Also, I am interested in how you are working with Prosci, LaMarsh, Darryl Connor to ensure those programs still add value and are not "replaced" by this certification."
Recognition as a valid certification by the industry... recruiters and employers need to begin to demand it for the masses in CM to move towards gaining the certification.
Indeed, there is lots of work to do! These are comments we take seriously and will be addressing in upcoming posts. In addition, the CCMP team is embarking on a series of conversations with organizations to determine how certification fits into their CM career path.
